(International) 23 Killed, 146 Wounded in Beirut Bombings
A double suicide bombing by a jihadist group outside the Iranian embassy in southern Beirut, Lebanon recently was claimed to be by the Abdullah Azzam Brigades. The group claims it will continue such attacks until Iranian-backed Hezbollah groups withdraw forces from Syria, where they fight alongside President Bashar Assads forces against predominantly Sunni rebels.
The Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon said that all staff inside the embassy were unharmed, but correspondents on the scene described blood, glass and charred bodies on the streets. Other sources also state that an Iranian diplomat was killed.
With Iran being one of Syrias closest allies and tensions rising over the conflicts in Syria, a number of terrorist attacks have taken place this year in southern Beirut.
State media referenced Saudi Arabia and Qatar as backing the Syrian uprising, stating an, odor of petrodollars comes from all the terrorist attacks against Syria, Lebanon and Iraq. Sunni Gulf Arab powers Saudi Arabia and Qatar are chief backers of the insurgency in Syria.
Iran accused Israel of the attack, but Israel immediately denied any involvement.
