(Politics) Gambia Breaks Off Diplomatic Ties with Taiwan
The Gambia, an African country which has maintained 18 years of diplomatic relations with Taiwan, announced abruptly on Nov. 15 through the media overseas that it was officially cutting ties with the Republic of China with immediate effect. The announcement immediately sent the country into an uproar.
It was not so long ago that President Ma Ying-jeou publicly stated that Taiwan was on good terms with all of its diplomatic allies and that the US, China and Japan were pleased to see the peace development of cross-Strait ties. Now, with a diplomatic ally turning its back on Taiwan, it has become apparent that President Mas diplomatic policy may be overly optimistic.
At present, there are only 22 countries left in the world with which Taiwan has established official diplomatic relations. If the situation continues, Taiwan may soon become isolated from the international community. When that day comes, Taiwans independence will be met with even tougher challenges.
