(Health) Detecting Alzheimers Early

Alzheimers and other dementia diseases are certainly scary conditions to contend with. The very thought of losing, well, our thoughts, is very hard to grasp. Yet, as we speak, millions and millions of people are starting to lose their most cherished memories and even forgetting how to do simple things, such as drive, eat or go to the bathroom.

Researchers in Spain have discovered that as many as 1/3 of dementia patients have specific symptoms way before the actual signs of the disease kick in. These can include changes in someones personality, where they become more depressed, irritable, and acting inappropriate. Another is a lessened ability to complete complicated or multi-step tasks. Even jobs or hobbies once performed by someone regularly can become difficult.

And, while deteriorating vision and speech problems do come often with an aging individual, if its in someone developing dementia, these problems come on quickly and occur frequently. Judging distance and depth perception, as well as visual reorganization slip, and a weaker vocabulary are signs of dementia.

One of the final signs is a person becoming more withdrawn socially. They may notice their behavior and try to avoid embarrassment by avoiding other people, or it could be part of depression, which happens often with the development of dementia.
