(International) Thai Political Protests Increase
Thai opposition protesters took to the streets in Bangkok in protest of the government and Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra recently, creating international concern over safety.
Tens of thousands of protesters gathered outside several ministries, including the interior, agriculture, transport and sports and tourism ministries, a day after protesting outside the foreign and finance ministries and demanding that officials leave.
Thailand has been a country of political unrest since 2006, when royalist generals overthrew the government and ousted Thaksin in a political coup. Although Shinawatra is generally supported by the rural and urban working class, she is hated by the middle class and elite who accuse her of threatening the monarchy in a country known for honoring its king and royal family.
A recent arrest warrant was approved for Suthep Thaugsuban, who recently resigned from the opposition Democrat Party to head the rallies.
A recent expansion of the Internal Securities Act allows authorities to block routes, impose a curfew, ban gatherings and carry out searches, although Yingluck has stated that authorities would absolutely not use violence against protesters.
