(Life) Smoking in Parks to Be Banned

In consideration of peoples health, a smoking ban will soon be extended to more public areas.

The Ministry of Health Welfare (MOHW) recently announced that smoking at parks nation-wide is likely to be banned as of April, 2014. The ruling will apply to national parks, national natural parks, forest parks, natural education parks, as well as other parks or green spaces regulated by urban planning laws and regional planning laws and listed as non-smoking areas. Smokers will only be permitted to smoke in designated areas and violators will be subject to a fine ranging from NT$2,000 to NT$10,000.

According to media reports, the largest non-smoking area is Yushan, otherwise known as Jade Mountain. It covers over 70,000 hectares of biological conservation areas and more than 3,000 hectares of special geological sites.

On another note, the MOHW has also stated that it is considering expanding non-smoking zones to T-intersections on public roads. Owing to mounting public complaints that pedestrians not only suffer from vehicle exhaust fumes, but also second-hand smoke from motorists at stop lights, fines between NT$2,000 and NT$10,000 may be imposed on those caught smoking cigarettes while waiting at red lights.
