(Health) Health Body Connects Sugary Drinks to Major Health Problems

The advisory body suggests that people drink water to avoid the dangers of obesity.

With the problems of cardiovascular disease, type-2 diabetes, and obesity on the rise, the International Chair on Cardiometabolic Risk (ICCR) is saying that the consumption of sugary drinks is largely to blame. The health body has presented several papers arguing that the rise in obesity can largely be traced to the growth in consumption of sugary drinks.

In 1990, we drank 39 liters of sugary drinks a year, a figure which jumped to 57 liters to 58 liters per year by 2007. The numbers of overweight youngsters has also risen steadily from just 3% in the 1960s to 14.5% in 2007.

In claiming that there is a link between sugary drinks and type-2 diabetes, the ICCR points to a number of damning clinical studies in which it has been shown that people who drink 1-2 sugary drinks every day are more likely to contract diabetes than those who dont have any.

The consumption of sugary drinks, explains ICCR, provides an extra load of calories, which is not compensated for in the same way as the ingestion of a high calorie solid food. This incomplete compensation is the cause of weight gain. To avoid this kind of calorie intake, the ICCR advises the consumption of water.
