(Business) Tech Spending Growth More Than 5% Worldwide

Worldwide information technology (IT) should reach US$2.14 trillion next year according to a report by the International Data Corp (IDC).

US corporate IT spending is expected to grow by 5%, West Europe 2%, China 8%, and Japan is predicted to remain flat.

According to the IDC report, the next 12 to 18 months should see a new capital spending cycle, partly due to global PC shipments showing stability in the last quarter.

An economic slowdown in emerging markets, especially those in Russia and China, as well as a slow pace of growth has led to difficulties in the IT sector. IDC Global Technology and Industry Research Organization Vice President Stephen Minton stated, This has been a tough year for many IT vendors, with infrastructure spending in the first half of the year proving weaker than previously expected.

Global smartphone shipments seem to be the main staple of the IT sector, without which the market would be in jeopardy. According to Minton, The overall industry has been propped up by continued strength in mobile devices especially smartphones, but the slowdown in emerging markets was another headwind for infrastructure-focused tech firms on top of government sequestration in the US and continued sluggish growth in Europe. Without mobile phones, the growth rate could be as low as 0.7%.
