(Business) Taiwan Ranks No. 4 As Worlds Nanotechnology Patent Holder

An industry expert ranked Taiwan as the worlds fourth-largest nanotechnology patent holder last year. The Taiwan Nano Week and Exhibition was recently held at Taipei World Trade Center, with Wu Cheng-yu, head of the National Program on Nanotechnology, stressing the importance of nanotechnology in the technology industry. According to event organizers, nano-innovation for nanotechnology and products were the themes of this years event. These included nanoelectronics, optoelectronics techniques, energy and environmental applications, and biomedical and agriculture applications. Training and education, advanced studies of nanoscience, and nanomaterials and traditional industry were also featured.

The National Program on Technology, established in 2003, has published 6,100 articles and won 1,500 patents. Close to NT$14.5 billion has been invested in 860 nanotechnology transfer projects, 630 of which have been completed, and Wu hopes the industrys production value could reach NT$1 trillion.

Interest in nanotechnology development around the world is increasing as the technological advances and opportunities in the field increase. Currently, the EU, US, Germany, Japan and South Korea are making plans to improve their nanotechnology.
