(International) Controversial Former Israeli Prime Minister Passes Away
85-year-old former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon passed away recently causing mixed reactions within Israel and abroad.
Many in the Arab world, and especially Palestine, view Sharon as a criminal for his involvement in the 1982 massacre of hundreds of Palestinians by Israels Lebanese Phalangist allies in Beiruts refugee camps, whereas leaders abroad saw him as a pragmatic, if not polarizing, leader made famous for his 2005 decision to pull out of Gaza. Within Israel, however, he is being celebrated as a former military general and hero who had a great impact on Israeli history.
Sharon had been in a coma since 2006 as a result of a massive stroke that cut short his political career at its peak, but even after 8 years in this state, his death still created worldwide attention and concern.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated, He will be remembered in the heart of the Jewish people forever as one of our most outstanding leaders and daring commanders. Although leaders from most other countries are cautiously diplomatic when describing the controversial leader, newspapers worldwide ran articles documenting his many achievements and historical impact.
Sharon will be buried at his former home in Sycamore Ranch in the southern Negev Desert after his military funeral.
