(Culture) New York Gastronauts will Eat Anything

Members of the special dining club try to eat everything the Big Apple has to offer.

The members of a strange club in New York pride themselves on eating anything the culinary world has to offer. Theyre called Gastronauts, and over the years, theyve eaten beaver tail, sheep eyeballs, and fertilized duck eggs. The club was established in 2006, and its first meeting was attended by only six people. Since then, it has grown quickly and now has over 1,000 members.

Art director and graphic designer Curtiss Calleo and magazine editor Ben Pauker founded the club, and, as Calleo says, it was a great way to meet new people, try new foods, and explore the city. He adds that its a social experience as well as a culinary experience. We get a lot of stories about travel and food-related illness.

The group meets every month in different restaurants. Dinners are usually open to 70-80 people, and the places apparently fill up very quickly. Calleo explains that diners arent forced into eating anything, but he adds that almost everyone tries the unusual foods on offer. Its rare for people to change their minds once theyre here, he said. I think its a mixture of peer pressure and a welcoming environment.
