(Education) Schools Go Overboard with Regulations
A number of school regulations have been slammed as they have been found to infringe on students rights.
It has recently been reported that junior and senior-high students at certain schools are being punished with demerits for being in a relationship, while being encouraged with awards to tell on pupils who engage in such relationships. What is more, some schools even have regulations in place, cautioning students against buying snacks from street vendors, eating while walking, and wearing non-uniform jackets when the temperature is above 12 degrees Celsius.
In response, the Humanistic Education Foundation has hit out at these unreasonable school regulations, saying they tread on students human rights and impede students understanding of democracy and the rule of law.
Similarly, Taiwan Alliance for Advancement of Youth Rights and Welfare secretary-general Yeh Ta-hua criticized many school regulations and practices, such as the installation of closed-circuit TV cameras in classrooms, for being blatantly in violation of domestic laws regarding the rights of children and youth and international human rights covenants. Yeh also requested that a standard for middle schools regulations be drawn up.
