(Local) Chinese Cruise Ship Passengers Return Home, Demand Answers
A luxury cruise liner stuck in Korea left more than 2,300 Chinese passengers and crew members stranded. A South Korean district court ordered the ship be detained over a legal dispute in the port of Jeju. The ship was impounded following a seizure application filed by a Chinese shipping company Jiangsu Shagang Group. The applications were against travel organizer HNA Tourism. The application claimed outstanding lease payments with an HNA subsidiary, Grand China Shipping.
The cruise, which originally set off from Tianjin, a port city near Beijing, was scheduled to sail around South Korean islands and ports, returning six days later, but was interrupted by the ships detainment.
At least seven airplanes left Beijing to claim the 1,659 passengers and 650 crew members. During the detention period, however, two passengers were reported to have had heart attacks, although this has not been officially confirmed, and one child claimed to have had a fever.
HNA stated that the timing of the incident was deliberate and led to the suffering of the passengers. They also stated that the South Korean authorities acted inappropriately and without respect for the Chinese people.
Many of the tourists are understandably upset, demanding a full explanation and compensation for their losses. Chinese media reported that HNAs delayed payment was the primary reason for the dispute, leaving many angry with the travel company.
