(Travel) Shanghai on a Budget
A trip to this modern city doesnt have to be expensive.
Shanghai is known for its futuristic buildings, expensive restaurants, and financial industry, which might put you off visiting if youre traveling on a budget. However, the paradox about Shanghai is that while its one of the most expensive cities in China, it can also be one of its cheapest. The city has excellent budget hotels and hostels, street food is tasty and cheap, and there are a lot of attractions that wont cost you a thing.
Shanghai has a rich and varied history, and many of its Chinese and European influences can be seen if you walk through the winding alleys in the older parts of the city. Two good places to wander are near the Peach Garden Mosque and through the French concession. In addition to wonderful old buildings, youll find people going about their day to day lives in a way thats uniquely Shanghainese.
The free-entry Shanghai Museum is also a wonderful place to stop, explore, and learn. Many of the artifacts are several thousand years old, and theyre divided into sections on weapons, clothing, porcelain, and bronze. Depending on your interest in history and culture, you could easily spend anywhere between half and a full day there.
