(International) Attacks Rock Ankara
The Turkish capital was the scene of rocket and grenade attacks.
A pair of explosions rocked the Turkish capital of Ankara last week, leaving one person injured. A rocket was fired at the ruling AK Party headquarters and grenades were thrown at the justice ministry. It was not immediately clear who had committed the attacks, but left-wing activists, Kurdish rebels, and Islamist militants have previously struck targets in the capital.
Although early reports claimed two people had been wounded, that was later amended to say that a single person was wounded at the ministry attack. The situation could easily have been worse as Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has an office in the AK Party building. It was also reported that windows on the seventh floor of the building were shattered by the rocket blast.
There was speculation that the attacks may be connected to a deal reported to have been struck between Erdogan and Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the Kurdish rebels. The rebels have been fighting for a homeland in southeast Turkey since 1984, but it was expected that Ocalan, who is in jail, will ask the fighters to lay down their weapons. The leader had also said that he would make a historic announcement on March 21.
