(Business) Starbucks, Amazon and Google in UK Tax Dispute

The PAC (Public Accounts Committee) has asked Starbucks, Amazon, and Google to explain how they managed to pay only small amounts of taxes in Britain while making millions in sales.

Margaret Hodge, a member of parliament for the opposition Labour Party and chairman of the PAC states, It makes people incredibly angry in the current fiscal climate.

According to a Reuters report, Starbucks has not paid any corporation or income tax in the past three years, and only 8.6 million pounds (US$13.74 million) in total UK tax during the 13 years, while its sales were 3.1 billion pounds.

Google avoids UK taxes by channeling non-US sales via an Irish unit, and Amazon avoids UK taxes by reporting European sales through a Luxembourg-based unit. By doing this, Amazon was able to pay a tax rate of only 11 percent last year, which is less than half the average tax rate in its major markets, and Google had a tax charge of just 3.4 million pounds despite its 4 billion in sales.

Both Britain and Germany plan to push the Group of 20 economic powers to pay the proper amount of taxes, and will work to fix loopholes that allow companies to ensure that profits made from sales in the UK do not go overseas.
