(Business) Good for Environment, Good for Business

In recent years, western multinationals have been stepping up efforts to go green. According to green-building experts, more and more environmentally sound factories have been built in Asia. For example, computer chip maker Intels factory in Vietnam, which opened in 2010, not only has the countrys largest operating array of solar panels, it also embraces environmental and sustainability measures far beyond those required by local laws. Similarly, consumer products giant Colgate-Palmolives green factories in Asia also place great emphasis on reducing construction waste and lowering water and energy use.

While it is difficult to estimate how much energy or money an average multinational saves by having a green-certified factory building, factory data suggests that certified facilities offer substantial energy savings. Furthermore, if the practice becomes widespread in Asia, the impact is believed to be significant since a great deal of consumer and industrial goods are manufactured there.

In addition, domestic manufacturers in Asia are also going green as well, either building greener or investing in efficiency upgrades. However, unlike western multinationals, whose green efforts are motivated by the desire to improve their corporate image or earn international certification, they are mostly doing so to reduce energy costs.
