As times get tough, and your job security tightens, there comes a time when you think about getting out of the job youre in and moving to one thats more fun, more exotic, and just more, well, interesting. And why not? The older we get, the more comfortable we are with ourselves and our own abilities, so ten or twenty years down the road, you may realize that your chosen college degree and career just arent the right fit for you. So, as you think about where to go next, take the time to consider why youre interested in a particular field. If its because of money, a trendy field, or just one where your friend is doing really well, then perhaps you should reconsider. Try finding a career counselor and look outside the box for jobs you may never have known existed.
Dialogue Example:
(Changing Careers) Nicole and Miley are coworkers. Nicole has decided to change jobs and go back to school. Miley is giving her some advice. Lets listen to their conversation.
Miley: So, youre finally gonna do it, huh? Youre going back to school?
Nicole: Yes! Im so excited. I cant wait to leave this lame job.
Miley: Well, dont jump too fast. Are you sure youre going to enjoy your next career more than this one?
Nicole: Well, its been something Ive wanted to do for a while. I even talked to a career counselor and took job assessment tests. They all said I would do well in that field.
Miley: Thats great! Id hate to see you spend all that money on school just to be unhappy again. Have you thought about doing an internship in the meantime? For extra experience?
Nicole: Oh, yes, I already have a part-time position lined up with a company that works in the same field as my studies. It should help a lot!
Miley: This all sounds fantastic! I must admit, Im a little jealous.
Nicole: It was still a hard decision, but I feel energized, in a way. Its like being just out of college again, but with the wisdom that comes with experience, too.
