(Education) Study Reveals Worrying Reading Habits
Not enough parents are reading with their children, which could damage their education.
A recent UK study suggests that parents are not spending enough time reading with their young children, and experts say that will affect their education. For the survey, which was commissioned by the publishers Pearson, about 2,000 parents were asked about their childrens reading habits. Around 10% said they read with their children less than once every six months.
Education experts have claimed that the best way to improve a childs reading and writing skills is to help them develop a love of reading. They add that even very small children can benefit from time with books, as they can look at the pictures, have the story explained to them, or simply listen to the sound of the words.
Most of the parents questioned also said their children spend far more time in front of a TV or computer screen than reading. There are worries that such habits will damage childrens attention spans, and certainly teachers seem to believe that this is happening. As part of the study, teachers were asked if students attention spans are shorter now than they used to be, and around 75% said yes.
